VFR in the mountains - Part II

You have not gotten your logs out yet for this rehash of a poorly planned flight? That leaves us with a truly nebulous scenario, any idea that we have may not fit where you were. The simple answer to the question of how to have had a better, safer outcome, would be that you needed to have had...

IFR and cost and future plans

You indicated that you are in a flying club. Any honestly managed flying club is cheaper than any owned aircraft. The annual, insurance, tiedown, licenses and permits for the radios and registrations all add up to much more than you realize The hours needed to research and keep all those items...

VFR in the mountains - a cautionary tale, especially for us flatlanders

Not to be complaining about above posts re Skewt-LogP charts, I do not expect most pilots to have skills for that type of info. George pointed out that in hindsight, he could have expected the conditions he encountered. I have flown several thousand miles in Florida, several times well west...

Why does POA call it a PPL, when it is a Certificate?

First Google listing when I searched for PPC was Professional Pyrotechnics Certificate, required for large scale use of explosives and visual fireworks type materials. This includes bombs. Not what you would prefer to discuss with TSA.

    TFR For Who?

The locals are getting ready for their VIP visitor. The Bidens’ destination remains uncertain, but billionaire Joe Kiani, a big political donor, owns a Santa Ynez Valley ranch. Biden’s son Hunter reportedly visited the ranch in March 2023. While it’s not clear if it’s related to the VIP visit...

Why does POA call it a PPL, when it is a Certificate?

Shouldn't it be the PPC? Fear that it would be confused with the other PPC? The perfectionists here should be insisting we have the correct acronym. edited to add :) If you Google PPC, you will find good reason not to claim holding a PPC while at an airport.

Class D VFR Clnc Del required if dedicated frequency?

The discussion is missing the two military airports, on either side of the airport, Newport News, in discussion. I have departed VFR from an airport near an active military one, and asked for flight following, and described my flight destination. The controller advised a large formation of...

VFR in the mountains - a cautionary tale, especially for us flatlanders

George nailed it. Inadequate weather knowledge, OR FAIL TO USE WHAT YOU HAVE, is the problem that leads us into marginal or worse flights. Local knowledge of the micro climates in Florida, West Virginia, or the rocky mountains is important if you are going to fly there. As a pilot who has...

    Purple Marten Housing

The martens will have only a small effect on the population during bad times, but they are great to watch. When the swamp dries up some, they will make a larger difference. My son's daughter built a bat house, and it became occupied more quickly than they expected. The night patrol helps.

    Aviators who are not pilots

Rentals had their own rules, and students who trained in Piper Cubs were required to do some training in nose wheel Piper's or Cessna's before solo rentals.

Tool box recommendations for future A&P mechanic

Some above have commented on their old, rusty, but solid tool boxes as completely adequate. I strongly agree, with the added bonus that if your tool box is stolen, you know it is an inside job, strangers will take the best looking box.

    Aviators who are not pilots

I have rented planes in Ireland and Argentina without showing my license, but both places, there was an instructor on board to keep me legal in the airspace. Since I have been ramp checked, I have had my PPL checked by the FAA. WDD, yes, way back then, if you had not been checked out in a...

    Aviators who are not pilots

In 1970, no endorsement for tailwheel,, it was the assumed standard. Endorsement was for trikes! My first lessons were in tailwheel planes. I had additional tailwheel time after my PPL, solo rental.

    Aviators who are not pilots

After learning of Fred's limitations, I took him flying in our C 150, and his takeoff and landing skills were impressive. Landings were soft, and he held the nose wheel off until elevator authority faded. Nothing went into his logbook, just mine, but flying with him was always relaxing and a...

    Aviators who are not pilots

A bit of history on the FAA written test. After a series of lawsuits, the modern stand alone individual questions became the standard. Previously, there were linked questions that if you missed the first, you could not get the next right. The wrong answers related to the incorrect first question...

What do you use in your mouse traps?

A load of salt in the bucket traps will prevent freezing, cheaper than antifreeze, no disposal problem, and will also tend to 'pickle' the mouse. We used bucket traps in electronic buildings, air conditioned to a very low humidity. No water in the bucket, they died and desiccated quickly. The...

    Oshkosh 2024 - Who's going?

Alcohol, bringing it, or buying on premises. My impression is that if they bring their own, they ration the consumption, assuring they do not run out. If they buy on premises, keep buying more, the credit card is never empty. At Sun and Fun, a nearby group sent out for a refill of the beer...

    Aviators who are not pilots

MauleSkinner, you live in a different world than I do. We have many influential congress people who live within 5 miles of our airport, who think it should only be a historic marker on the nearest road. For many years, we had serial numbers on each tree on the approach path to the runway, and...
