Panel upgrade - getting modern gps

I second that. I can hardly imagine flying instruments without an HSI anymore. - Martin

    New England to Oshkosh

With a raft you might just have a chance. (If you can get the raft out and inflated.) With just a life vest... I wouldn't count on it. Cold water - lots of it! - it would likely be a while before anyone can be near you to rescue you. - Martin

From South to OSH - good fuel stop midway (HUF) and fartheset north (MSN)?

I'm hoping somebody local will chime in and confirm. I don't think I'd expect any problems with flying to Madison VFR, but I've not tried that myself during Oshkosh. It would also be prudent to confirm a parking spot with the FBO ahead of time (in addition to a hotel in town). - Martin

From South to OSH - good fuel stop midway (HUF) and fartheset north (MSN)?

What day are you planning to go? There are pre-Oshkosh events which many people plan into their journey. They are fun, and they facilitate an early arrival at Fisk the day you fly to Oshkosh. Friday July 21 is “Rock the Ramp” in Middleton, WI (suburb of Madison). Thursday July 20 is the large...

End of the Rope: My Flight to Hollywood

Great story and write-up! I admit, when I read “flying 1000+ miles to see a movie” over in the other thread, I was scratching my head. Now I know I would have absolutely done the same thing! - Martin

Suburban man aimed laser pointer at state police plane

Time to put laser-guided bombs on our airplanes :)

Engine Monitor- what would be some alarm bells if seen?

Simply put, you look at CHTs to look for problems. Rapidly rising CHTs are a sign of concern, as are excessively high CHTs. High CHTs are indicative of high internal cylinder pressures, which put stress on the engine. And hot metal is weak metal. You add these two together, and you have a recipe...

Headwinds and Ice - Flying Home from the Beech Bash

My flight home from the Beech Bash 2023 was into a stiff (40+ knots) headwind, which not just slowed me down but also required a strategy for avoiding icing (a bit unusual this time of year). Still, it was a fun flight concluding a fun weekend in Madisonville, KY (2I0).

    New England to Oshkosh

One thing to consider is that the Chicago area/NW Indiana is a funnel for aircraft from the eastern Unites States going to Oshkosh. Many people won't cross Lake Michigan, and going west of Chicago is a detour - which makes the lake shore appealing. So everyone goes low over the lake shore, under...

the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

I would do it the same way again (i.e. two GTN 750s). GPS is important, so I think a second (backup) GPS makes sense. I'm OK without another large MFD (flight plan map) in front of me, so a G3X, G500TXi or similar would simply show a large PFD. As for which one drives the autopilot... the NAV...

the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

Yes, I have two GTN750s. Prior to the GTNs, I had two Avidyne IFDs: a large IFD550, and a small IFD440. What I found is that everything was much easier to do on the large screen than the small one (no surprise, I guess), which basically meant that the IFD440 was really only used as a second...

Student Pilot Solo Cross Country Overnight?

100% agreed. Maybe I am overly cautious here. My thinking is if something goes wrong on a flight (ANY flight), people/lawyers will be looking for someone to blame. In this case, the CFI who endorsed the flight will be under intense scrutiny, and it may very well make a difference whether the...

Student Pilot Solo Cross Country Overnight?

§ 61.89 (General Limitations) says a student pilot may not act as pilot in command of an aircraft in furtherance of a business. Now I understand that golf is not necessarily business, but I've interpreted this regulation as saying that training flights should be for the purpose of training...

    Gem from recurrent training

Oh man, be careful what you wish for! Don’t get me wrong - I see (first hand) the benefit of training with new avionics, but I don’t think we want the FAA in charge of how exactly we go about that. - Martin

    Leaning for Power?

Indeed. George built an engine test stand to collect data from multiple engine. That data went into (among other things) their APS class. The general dependencies, peaks, inclines and declines are valid for any internal combustion engine - whether it's your lawn mower, your car or your airplane...

Aspen and EA100… The good, bad, and ugly?

I have a Pro MAX PFD (part of an Aspen 2500 MAX 3-screen system). The display update rate is perfectly fine on mine. - Martin

    Leaning for Power?

There are no units or numbers on this graph. This was done intentionally, because the actual numbers (fuel flow, degrees, PSI, HP) would differ greatly from one situation/engine to another. What the graph tries to show is the peaks, inclines and declines of the various items, and the approximate...

    Leaning for Power?

And there you go. The graph is not correct. Because if it was, the conclusion wouldn't make sense. - Martin
