I can’t do lunchtime, but the morning still works. I’ll plan arrival at JVL around 9:00 AM tomorrow (Saturday). Hopefully I’ll see some of you there! - Martin

Let's do Bessie's then. Does 10AM sound good? I could do earlier if needed, but probably not much later.

Looks like a beautiful weekend is coming up! My arm could be twisted to have breakfast at the Jet Room (MSN) or Bessie’s (JVL) on Saturday.

The 21st might work for me. Also, October 19th is the monthly "Third Thursday" BBQ in Mason City, IA (KMCW). Always a fun event, and I plan to be there. Grills start at 6:00 PM. Bring meat for yourselves and a side dish to share. More info on this Facebook page - Martin

What a bureaucratic nightmare to fly GA in Europe

Please let's all go a step further, and not just rely on AOPA and EAA but actively support them by being members. Our membership fees and our donations to the AOPA PAC help keep this kind of crap from coming over here. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: The USA is paradise on earth...

    Airspeed, or Altitude After Takeoff?

I'm aiming for a compromise between airspeed and altitude. When departing from long runways and/or flat terrain, there is really no need for a Vx climb, ever. I can somewhat see the rationale behind Vy, though personally I transition (slowly) to my cruise climb speed pretty quickly. In the...

    Richard McSpadden Crash

In a word: yes. It is just luck (or lack of it) when we are handed an impossible situation to deal with. In an engine-out situation at low altitude over hostile terrain, there is not much that can be done with skill and experience. The outcome - whether the occupants get hurt or not - is a...

30-Day VOR Check with Avidyne 540 and Garmin G5

You turn the G5 and IFD540 to VLOC (green needles), then twist the course knob to center the deviation indicator - that gives you the bearing to/from the VOR. Or, a bit easier: bring up the VOR information in a data block on the IFD540, and you can read the bearing directly without any mode...

    Coast-to-Coast Flight Training

All my flying life, for my own learning and development I've looked for instructors who have experience and flight time, not instructors who are seeking experience and flight time for themselves. A coast-to-coast cross-country trip can be a phenomenal learning opportunity, but instructors who...

Advertising yourself as an independent cfi? Where and how do you do it

I don't know if Part 61 is growing or shrinking, but I am getting noticeably more requests for flight instruction (Part 61) this year than in past years. There are fewer instructors available to help after the airlines went on a hiring spree, and it makes it harder for students to find Part 61...

New Traffic display for ADSB-In devices

Let me make sure I don't misunderstand: are you issuing RAs (resolution advisories) just based on ADS-B data? If so, how are you avoiding guidance that could be in conflict with what the other airplane's TCAS is telling their pilots? RAs are great when two TCAS systems talk to each other. If...

How to work the airplane vs. how the airplane works

Doug Rozendaal and I sat down yesterday to chat about different training approaches. Airlines these days teach pilots how to work the airplane, using a QRH with checklists and guidance to troubleshoot. Why that doesn't work well in our typical light GA aircraft, and what we can do about it is...

    Help me understand ATP requirements

Ah, OK. I thought the way most people did this was to get the ATP written, then do the type-rating, the successful completion of which also completes the ATP. - Martin

LPV as alternate. 600 or 800 feet?

You make some good points, John. Thanks also for the links to the WAAS/LPV status and performance charts. Still, if we can accept 800-2 as standard alternate minimums for true non-precision approaches, it seems strange that we are not considering any relaxation for having LPV capability...

    IAF not on IFR Charts

As others have pointed out, you can simply fly to the IAF (GPS direct). The days when an IAF had to exist on the enroute chart (or a STAR, or a feeder route from enroute to the IAF) are long gone - and that's a good thing. - Martin

    School me on IFR panels

Another vote for a slaved HSI. It makes the scan easier and eliminates the need to constantly reset the gyro to the compass - you'll have more important things to do. Ideally look for an electronic one with a ground track indicator - it removes the guesswork out of wind correction. Just line up...

LPV as alternate. 600 or 800 feet?

Thanks for the update on AC 90-119, John. I sure hope LPV approaches will eventually qualify for 600-2 alternate minimums. SBAS outages seem exceedingly rare - in all my flying, I have never experienced a fallback from LPV (or LP) to LNAV. Though I have experienced (very rarely) a full GPS...

Midwest POA June Brunch: June 22, 2024 1000 CDT, The Jet Room at KMSN, Madison, WI.

No - different events. Beech Party is in Tullahoma (THA) Oct 10-14. The BeechTalk fly-in is in Knoxville (DKX) Oct 6-8. Both are fun events. The Beech Party is much bigger than the BeechTalk fly-in in terms of participation and programming. - Martin
