Forward vs Aft CG and Cruise Speed/Efficiency

First of all, let's be careful with the word "stall speed" (some people suggest we should not even use the term). An airfoil stalls when the relative air is beyond the critical angle of attack, not below at a certain speed. Now, when we talk about 1g unaccelerated straight flight, at a given...

I find this extraordinary: the CEO is also the test pilot

Thank you, @Half Fast - I knew there was a famous quote there somewhere, but I couldn't remember who it was. - Martin

Can a CFII instruct with Basicmed instead of an FAA medical?

Flight instructors can absolutely operate under BasicMed, with the same limitations for aircraft, altitude, speed, etc. that apply to all BasicMed operations. - Martin

Why do we switch fuel tanks before landing?

With a little planning, switching tanks just before landing should be perfectly avoidable. I cringe whenever I see pilots reach for the fuel selector handle the millisecond their GPS timer tells them to switch tanks, like their lives depend on immediate action. What's the hurry? In the pecking...

Forward vs Aft CG and Cruise Speed/Efficiency

Yes, you can see the W&B details at the end of this video: From flying with different loads and distributions, I, too, find 10 knots difference hard to believe just from moving one person from the front to the back seats. But I admit I have not tried it in a Cardinal. - Martin

I find this extraordinary: the CEO is also the test pilot

Reminds me of the very early days of aviation, where the engineer who designed the airplane was typically also the very first test pilot. It greatly accelerated progress in aircraft design as it helped eliminate design principles of aircraft that turned out to be not safe. Somewhat macabre, yes...

Forward vs Aft CG and Cruise Speed/Efficiency

I installed an all-electric air conditioning system in my A36 Bonanza this past summer (the one from Kelly Aerosystems). It added 60 lbs, all in the tail, with a corresponding rearward move of my CG. Now, an A36 is by design somewhat CG-forward, and requires noticeable aft forces/trim when flown...

GFC-500 is a GPS only Autopilot

Your finding is accurate, David. This is well documented in Garmin's AFMS and has been widely discussed in online forums, including here on PoA. Note that the GFC500 is capable of flying HDG mode, as well as VS and IAS. That can be a big help in the rare (at least in the US) situation that one...

So, Why Do We Need EAGLE And ASTM, Anyway? (Avweb)

Thanks for this reference, @Hang 4 - that makes sense; I hadn't seen it posted before from GAMI. - Martin

So, Why Do We Need EAGLE And ASTM, Anyway? (Avweb)

To my knowledge, neither GAMI nor Swift have made any statements regarding mixing G100UL and Swift fuels. I very much doubt that GAMI would endorse treating a mixture of G100UL and Swift fuel as equivalent to G100UL, given that Swift fuels are approved for a subset of aircraft which can use...

So, Why Do We Need EAGLE And ASTM, Anyway? (Avweb)

Good question, but one that has been answered by GAMI. See their G100UL FAQ (look for "S6 - Does the G100UL specification require the use of ASTM tests for conformity testing?"): https://g100ul.com/faq In there, they state: "Nearly all of the test requirements are the same as for ASTM D910...

So, Why Do We Need EAGLE And ASTM, Anyway? (Avweb)

@geezer is correct in that quality control at various steps along the way is important for production and distribution of fuel. But I don't see why an ASTM spec would be the only way to define and achieve reliable quality control. In fact, GAMI has addressed quality control for G100UL, without...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

I know a few people who have done 1., and they are happy with it. I don't think I would enjoy it too much myself, though. It works well technically but isn't great from a human factors perspective. 2. and 3. are both solid options. The TXi is obviously nicer and does more, but I've flown the #3...

So, Why Do We Need EAGLE And ASTM, Anyway? (Avweb)

Boeing CEO is taking a pay cut

That's not the Kelly Ortberg I know from Collins. He could retire comfortably if he wanted to; I believe he truly wants to make a positive difference here and lead Boeing to better days. - Martin

In aircraft oxygen solutions for short flights and up to max. altitude of 10,000 feet?

I have an Inogen G5. Works great for two people at 14,000', and for a single user even a bit higher. It's powered through the cigarette lighter port. Won't start automatically when powered, though - so this unit cannot be remote-mounted but has to be within reach of the user. It's changed how I...

First plane? Archer, Arrow, etc. any recommendations

Archers are great first airplanes! Before you get an Arrow, I'd look closely at Dakotas. Better speed and payload than an Archer and a roomy cabin, even in the back, without the added complexity of a retractable gear. Helps with maintenance and insurance. - Martin
