The self-flagellation of the frugal and mechanically minded(a rant)

I hand wash my dishes… Ok, to be fair I believe I have rebuilt a #2 lead pencil before. If I owned a dishwasher, I’d never be able to find time to work on planes…

    Van's RV-9A Crash @ Saluda County (6J4) SC

You might be surprised how far off centerline is common… albeit bad. I see this A LOT as an instructor to gets asked to fly along with who I thought were good pilots. And I suppose they are, just ain’t got no control of centerline!

How do you determine market value for a FSBO without signing up with a realtor

I had a realtor go find other houses for sale, literally knocked on doors and asked to see the home for a comparison. Seemed well received. Wasn’t a problem and we got great info.

Is it normal for a student pilot to feel sad like this?

I think there are more ATPs than anything else. And we DO get paid like Uber drivers. But… I digress. The ATP is the easiest rating to get. The Private is the hardest. And doing a LOT of both private level flying and ATP level flying, there’s not a lot of overlap. Two different worlds...

Is it normal for a student pilot to feel sad like this?

It sounds like flying isn’t living up to your expectations of it…. That is a genuine cause for revaluation. I don’t say that to be harsh blah blah blah. It’s just my observation as someone who also started “obsessed”. Something you REALLY want shouldn’t make ya feel that way. Doesn’t...

Woman Backs Into Propeller, Kansas, fatal, 10/27

I’m at a loss for how to prevent these sorts of things other than total abstinence… ie just shut the motor down before a door moves. thought I saw a pic of her with a rig on… this places the accident squarely on distraction likely. She KNOWS her way around a plane. The thing about putting...

    Faa aam300 correspondence

Really going out of the box and unlikely… but… seems it should be in your medical file already, so if you could get your medical file in less than the 60 days (that’s the unlikely), is that any better? Can get it electronically, so it’s not an issue of shipping/mailing/etc.

    Growler Down

The really zen part was from abeam to touchdown… The fun and amazing part was the stack and general procedures around the boat. That was a huge part of your reputation. There might 15-20 planes overhead waiting for the launch to end before recovering. The launch was frequently 15-20 planes...

    Growler Down

I imagine area under the curve is similar… Boat flying, which is mainly landing, requires CRAZY precision, but for about a minute per flight. It seems crop dusting requires a little less precision, but for HOURS. Landing on the boat is like a free throw in basket ball. Not particularly...

Transitioning to instruments is basically seamless…. You don’t even think about it. The approach turn behind the boat is basically an instrument maneuver. We’re trained in transitioning to instruments in the blink of an eye in the case of flying formation in the goo. You may be chugging along...

Continental GO-300 Engine Cylinder #2 not starting

Seen a cleaned newly gapped plug do this. I’d try a different plug and see if the problem moves with it.

    Growler Down

We lost a squadron commander who popped off a low level. The most classic case of CFIT ever to happen… hit 10 degrees nose down, 10 degrees angle of bank. No one is immune. It was a flight of two. CAG/DCAG (not a great idea, just because), Squadron CO/ADMIRAL (ship driver, good guy) all...

Hmmm… saw that make on o-470s, so the shower of sparks jives. See? Shouldn’t EVER get rid of a plane! Now what ima gonna do? Ha!

Ah… it’s on the nose of a experimental biplane, a Starduster Too… The TCDS for a -1 ONLY lists the S6LN-8, but there’s gotta be normal mags on other variations of this motor that should work fine, like yours! Are there any other specs on those mags like a part number? I’m gonna look into...

    Growler Down

Not common, but not unheard of. Usually pretty colorful…. You see ‘em all the time, you maneuver to avoid them. All my buds that have had them said it was unavoidable. Just a speck then a splat. I’ve had lots of small bird hits in the pattern, but not on a low level.

FFS. I need a new hobby.

But really, how is this unique to flying… this sort of REALLY horrible service is the norm in a disposable society. Sorry to hear it! I really am. I like your plan of building your own. Keep us in the loop. My dad is up to four A&Ps that can’t time a mag on a Taylorcraft… Me, I watch...
