Your CFI needs to spend some time in the shop and watch the gear while it retracts. As soon as the nose gear rotates it disengages from the steering linkage and it rides on a centering cam to straighten the nose wheel.

I fly in this area regularly....and use flight following. Just a few days ago I went around the north side of BWI and was cleared thru the SFRA....with no SFRA flight plan. So, there is that. I requested a Bravo clearance and got better. Ya just never know what they will give ya.
It could be a bad winding in the motor....as it heats up the coil opens...or if there are run capacitors they do go bad.....just a thought.
