The "Back in my day" Thread

Just took my kids to their first drive-in movie a few weeks back. Put a Queen-size air mattress in the back of the Excursion with blankets and pillows with the JL Audio sound system going. Wife and kids made it through the first movie (Nightmare Before Christmas) but crashed halfway through...

The "Back in my day" Thread

MapQuest was one of those short-lived solutions between outright using a road map and when GPS/Google Maps became commonplace in the car/cell phone. People driving around with a stack of MapQuest papers for the route, lol.

The "Back in my day" Thread

Pulled a very similar Pioneer cassette deck (same knobs and tuner dial) out of my 1976 ski boat a few years back. Still worked just fine, but I was upgrading to something with a bit more power and Bluetooth/CD capability.

Did the same thing in many cars when CD players first came out. The tape deck adapter was very common and came with most Sony Discman portable CD players. FM transmitters were another good solution but suffered from more interference.

Xennial here. Bikes, garden hose, no cell phone until around 2002 when I was in college. Plenty of cars with roll up windows still (my parents '89 Jeep Cherokee for one). After school every day we played some sort of pick up football, baseball, street hockey (remember roller blades?), etc...

FAA will lay off all ARTCC meteorologists and use automated forecasting instead

I'd think ATC internally is probably who utilize that the most for traffic planning. I doubt the major airlines are using FAA meteorologists for their flight planning. The little guys are all pulling their data from independent sources on their iPads anyway.

[rant] The really bad design thread

UTVs with short wheelbases and narrow tracks tend to get pretty squirrely when you're moving at a decent pace! Easy to oversteer/overcorrect and end up heading toward the scenery.

You can trade radiator leaks for oil leaks, lol.

So, Why Do We Need EAGLE And ASTM, Anyway? (Avweb)

Especially since G100UL can be mixed with 100LL with no ill effects. Shouldn't need to ensure anything on the tanker-side of the equation is cleaned as long as it's the same ones used for 100LL.

Trick question. Lemmy IS God. Lol.

    Lets make Friday 'Joke Day'!

Going to be a strange garden with flowers growing out of a bunch of bird skeletons.

[rant] The really bad design thread

It's apparent few have dealt with a radiator drain in the past 2 decades, lol. Just about every one of them uses a plastic drain petcock which usually snaps off the first time you try to do anything with it.

Is it OK to tell everybody that my dog had puppies?

Seems like you're not giving equal opportunity to other breeds.

    Gami gas has arrived...

The good sign is that there's a moderate chance G100UL could be as cheap or cheaper than 100LL once everyone is running it and economy of scale kicks in.

    Tankless water heaters

Both transfer energy, they don't cause heat. :)

    Thinking About Kids Dirt Bikes

I figure the TTR90 (or newer TTR110) might be a good option if my daughter likes the TTR50 after a bit. She's on the taller end of most 8yr-olds, but not crazy tall. My son is still pretty small in height/weight, but I think the TTR50 ought to be a good fit for a few years. Just figured I'd...

    Thinking About Kids Dirt Bikes

@Ted how's the TTR50 holding up for the kids? Thinking about getting one for mine (8yr old girl, 5.5yr old boy). They have 24V Razor 4-wheelers they run around the yard on, but we've got a ~5ac small field (flood retention pond technically) accessible in our neighborhood as well as 12 acres of...

    Tires for F-450

Just about any 10+ply tire in an F-450 is going to feel like bouncing down the road unless you've got something heavy in tow, lol. Running 65-80psi isn't going to make the tire too compliant with bumps.

    Tires for F-450

I run Cooper Discoverer AT3 xlt on my Excursion. Good wear, not too noisy, good enough on gravel, snow (only tested in 8-10") and slick boat ramps. Just a good all around all-terrain. I wouldn't want to rely on them in truly nasty/deep mud or snow, but for mostly paved use with occasional runs...

FFS. I need a new hobby.

Send the current oil off to Blackstone for oil analysis and see what comes up. I'm wondering if because your engine has had unit averages for Iron near 46-48 at points in the past, it doesn't raise alarms despite being above universal averages. Also not sure if their universal averages are...
