    Florida in Crosshairs Again…. Milton

Happily our place in Sarasota should be well clear of any flooding. Hope the new roof stays on!

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

The penultimate day of the trip dawned sunny and bright. We packed and caught a ride from the motel owner in her muscle car straight to the airport; breakfast would come at our first stop, after a short flight. It was just under an hour’s flight to the airport at Window Rock; here we walked...

    Florida in Crosshairs Again…. Milton

That's what we get when people decide to just leave their planes/cars in the way of the hurricane.

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

It was an early start the following morning. The reason that I had chosen Tehachapi for the overnight was its proximity to the Mojave Air and Space Port. This facility hosts the National Test Pilot School where my friend Jeremy, who I had first met in Brisbane, was now working. He had invited us...

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

I'm certainly hoping to put a Deltahawk engine in it once it's available for the C182 - better fuel economy, and much better fuel availability!

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

Tehachapi has always been one of my favourite stops in the US. I love the mountains there, the campground (although we weren't camping this time) and the small, walkable town. I also wanted to show my Dad the loop! The fuel price was decent, and it was close to Mojave, our first stop the next day.

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

Although I had planned a flight for the next day, it was to be a short one; a hop across southern California to the mountain town of Tehachapi. I slept late, and after waking Dad and I drove out for a true American breakfast at the International House of Pancakes. Now well fed, we returned to...

Governor signs ban on 100LL into law

    Man that sounds familiar.

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

Finally, the time had come. Time to head to the mainland. I called Atlantic Aviation and they sent the fuel truck over. We topped off the four wing tanks before turning our attention to the ferry tank in the cabin. I had been watching the wind forecasts over the previous few days and things...

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

It seemed foolish to set out on a 2,050 nautical mile flight after maintenance without performing a test flight first. I decided to make this a tour of the Big Island, to see a few new sights and land at a few new airfields. I flew anti-clockwise along the north coast first, towards the local...

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

After a lovely B&B breakfast we walked down to the falls, where we came across a small pump house which seemed to be supplying water to the Inn. Returning to the Inn, we loaded up our rental Jeep and headed out to explore some of the Big Island. Waterfall at the Inn Our first destination was...

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

Today we continue the Hawaii visit. ====================================================================== The next morning we drove a little inland to attend the Maui Pineapple Tour, at the Maui Gold Pineapple Plantation. About 15 of us were bundled onto a little tour bus and we set off...

Man who crashed snowmobile into a parked Black Hawk helicopter suing government for $9.5M

A pretty bizarre result. Key points in the article include the fact that the snowmobiler *knew the helicopter was there*, and that the crew were at the helicopter and tried to signal the idiot with a light but he was wearing tinted goggles (at night) and going 70mph.

    Katamarino's Round the World flight

With the next adventure drawing very close, time to finish this off. Sorry for the laziness. The next day was a non-flying day, visiting Pearl Harbor. Full write-up on the website and I won't repeat it here. The following morning we made our way out to the airport again. Before departure to...

    Continental O470 EGT alarms setting

Absolute EGT is pretty meaningless. I wouldn't have any alarm set on them at all. I specifically asked Continental if they have any EGT limit for normally aspirated engines, and they said no.

    Can I use a 20a toggle switch?

Pretty sure that Garmin dictates one of the G5s is supposed to be on the main bus (AI, if I recall correctly).

    Continental 0470 R - Cylinder Replacement Inevitable?

The quality of cylinders I've seen coming out of Continental or Superior recently have been junk. Until they've been reworked by a decent cylinder shop I 100% expect them to need work after a few hundred hours. The last one I sent in, the *intake* guides were somehow shot. I operate the engine...

    Egregious FBO charges

Many, many times. Particularly out west I've flown to scores of small airports that post their fees right on the ramp, and often have a drop box and envelopes to leave money.

Jump starting a 'plane with a battery pack

Am I correct in thinking that I should be able to start the engine with battery switch off, and start pack connected, if using the ground power connector?
