Upcoming AD for many more PA-28 and PA-36 wing spars. 100 anomalies and 6 cracked wings found

I'm guessing that's also where Diamond's recurring maintenance schedule came from. As I recall there were both voluntary and required inspections... Or maybe it was just that we decided to have all the 2000-hour inspection items done at 1000 hours (we purchased the plane with just under 700...

Important aspects of flying (outside of passing the checkride) that a pilot should learn for PP.

The airlines absolutely do W&B for every flight. It's required by 14 CFR 121.693. Pilots may not be directly calculating W&B on paper, but there is absolutely a weight and balance calculation that occurs for every air carrier flight, be it by pilots or dispatchers, of course these days assisted...

Important aspects of flying (outside of passing the checkride) that a pilot should learn for PP.

I've had entire threads about this recently, but I agree that there are some fairly big deficiencies to a lot of training. Nothing like the real thing. Unfortunately, a lot of training is concentrated in areas like Arizona for exactly the reason that IMC is incredibly rare, and even the...

    What if... Modernizing GA

That only spells out lateral limits. It could be used, but IMO you don't need mountain training to transit across northern Alabama at 10,000 feet for example. The thing with limitations is that they really need to be "right sized" or people will resist them, and rightfully so. Yes, book...

That's it I am getting my clearances on the ground

That is exactly what they are/were. That's probably also why the FAA now just publishes phone numbers to get your clearance directly from ATC, which is the far better option anyway.

    Shop Recommendation Request

Not too near CO, but I'm very happy with my local shop, Skycom Avionics. Between my plane and the club I've handled several upgrades there, and while they will not be the lowest quote you get, they *will* do the job for the quoted price, and they'll do it right the first time, which is always...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

While #1 is a little "weird" it's the way I'd go if this is a thing you're looking to do today. I say that mainly because the GFC500 is hands down the best autopilot out there, but I'm not sold on the G500 TXi to drive it. The G3X Touch is significantly cheaper, can do bidirectional miscompare...

    Hang it Proud

As am I, but I'm also glad I live in a country where I can choose to blow my money on 100LL instead of a flag. Also, there are two flags in my hangar. One on each side of the tail of my airplane.

Upcoming AD for many more PA-28 and PA-36 wing spars. 100 anomalies and 6 cracked wings found

Thank you @Bell206. I knew the DA40 didn't have a life limit but I didn't know the rules behind it. I do know that it has dual main wing spars and they did successfully complete the structural certification with one of the spars missing/removed.

    What if... Modernizing GA

Which is a great thing to do, but it does not reduce your insurance rates or the liability on the manufacturer of your airplane. Mountainous terrain that needs training isn't particularly hard to figure out. If you're going to be within, say, 3,000 feet of the peaks within 10 miles, maybe...

Personal Locator Beacon - Still Relevant?

Nobody knows yet... Although the iPhone 14 came out >2 years ago and they're not charging anything just yet.

Woman Backs Into Propeller, Kansas, fatal, 10/27

Maybe it's just because I'm tall and can lean. ;) Right seaters can clear the right prop too.

    What if... Modernizing GA

I look at this as being a superset of the Cirrus Access program that existed for a short time in the mid-2000s. The idea was to allow the type of customer Cirrus was going for - A reasonably high net worth individual who isn't a pilot yet but wants to buy a Cirrus for the things the Cirrus is...

    What if... Modernizing GA

Excellent point, and the sort of somewhat-radical thinking that got me on this kick to begin with. Inexpensive pressurization and an efficient powerplant that works up high would be great. I think lots of people would be interested in a turbine or something with that kind of smoothness that...

FFS. I need a new hobby.

EAA benefit used to be Solidworks, now it's SolidEdge... Which is why I'm not gonna depend on EAA to make CAD affordable enough. I don't want to have to learn a new one when they change sponsors. Personally, I'm learning Fusion360 (which I think they're rebranding to just "Fusion" now). It...

Woman Backs Into Propeller, Kansas, fatal, 10/27

You what??? I have never been able to see the bottom/right parts of the prop arc in any single. There's an engine and cowling in the way. In a twin, meanwhile, you can look out the side window and see pretty much the whole thing on most types.

    What if... Modernizing GA

It's not the surveillance "state". The government isn't involved. And I'm not even saying I like it, or that I'd buy it. I'm saying it's the first idea I had to combat the huge cost of everyone else's liability when it comes to flying. I sure as heck wouldn't let the FAA see my flight data...

Wake Turbulence: Small behind a Large

Yes. And while I'm one to get all mathy and spew data everywhere, the simple fact is that I've never been in a turbine that didn't climb out the top of the inverted wedding cake. If you're going 180 knots and getting 3,000 fpm, or 240 knots and 4,000 fpm, that's 1000 feet per nautical mile...
