CPL stuff: Private, Non-common, common carriage ... oof

Yup. The difference between 121 and 135 is not scheduled vs. unscheduled (on-demand). And there's nothing about part 125 or 91 sub K at all. Of course, actually covering all of this would make for a really gnarly flowchart. It'd probably be better as an interactive web tool or something.

Important aspects of flying (outside of passing the checkride) that a pilot should learn for PP.

"continuously monitoring" with a single gauge is kinda difficult. Even those that have multiple/switchable gauges (where you may have two gauges for six tanks for example) aren't particularly conducive to continuous monitoring. "Know thy airplane" is always a good idea, though.

NA - Need house smoke detectors

I had this same problem. The cause is that you and I both have smoking hot wives. :D  In my neighborhood, if my house started on the fire during the day the only thing that a smoke detector would do is make it burn down LOUDLY. I wanted Internet-connected detectors so I could actually...

Air Blue crash - captain with 25,000 hrs just as bad as some private pilots

I've been getting that a lot on embedded YouTube videos the last few days. For example, I was trying to play some videos on Best Tugs' website earlier tonight and YT said I needed to sign in. Of course, when I hit the link it takes me to YouTube where I'm already signed in and the video works...

Ironic, since a chicken has one less finger than we do. ;)

Spend my money - which autopilot?

Based on what I've read, I believe the answers are yes and no. If it's reverting to ROL and PIT, it's not going to go nuts on you during that 5 seconds, it's going to hold steady... But you'll need to put it back in the appropriate modes.

    Tug advice.

We have the lazy susan on our Best Tug. Best thing ever when you have a Mooney! I can now turn the plane in place when it's on the tug with no worries about the very tight nosewheel limits (9 degrees on one side of center, 12 degrees on the other side!) Also the Best Tugs are very quiet. If you...

Poor transition training into the type and a pilot who isn't necessarily aware of the pitfalls of a particular aircraft's systems.

Important aspects of flying (outside of passing the checkride) that a pilot should learn for PP.

OK. I can buy that... But the other very good explanation I've heard for pattern stall-spin accidents is this: First, that it's much harder to recover from a skidded spin entry, and that many/most CFIs tell students to limit their bank angle to 20 or 30 degrees in the pattern (to avoid an...

    After/Back Fire Causing Loose Exhaust?????

Diagnose the shimmy. Unfortunately, the MO of this place is to pay as little as they can, so they tend to hire people straight out of A&P school and pay them crap. Inevitably, this means that they leave for greener pastures fairly quickly once they have some experience, and thus you're always...

Balancing Moderation for a Thriving Community

Where can I talk with about politics with other pilots who I've largely met in person? And have it work? FWIW, I have found through Facebook that some people I used to greatly respect seem to have only a very tenuous grasp on reality, so no, I don't think it'd work any more.

    Electroluminescent panels

Hi all, I'm curious if anyone here has built an electroluminescent instrument panel? The DA40 has a panel that is done this way and is SUPER good looking and easy to read at night - Unfortunately, I couldn't find a pic that didn't have the glareshield lights on full as well, but if you look at...

    After/Back Fire Causing Loose Exhaust?????

Hey @vontresc! Haven't seen you here in a while! Welcome back. IMO, it sounds like their usual shoddy work. "I saw them do it" yeah right. For those not acquainted, this is the same shop that charged up a battery and then left the master on afterwards... Another series with them: Nose gear...

GFC-500 is a GPS only Autopilot

They make a sensible explanation... And for the price difference between the GFC500 and GFC600, I'd be OK with using non-nav modes or hand flying in the incredibly rare circumstance of a complete GPS failure. The GFC500 is both far cheaper and far more capable than anything that came before it...

    So I bought a C182 - what now?

Thanks for the stats. I concur that I'd rather have a GTN than a GNS. As for the area, the differing aspect ratios probably make the 650 look smaller. I'm surprised the diagonal is that close, but the 530 did have buttons and knobs on the sides.

    Tug advice.

The Sidewinder is definitely the budget choice. I have a tow bar from them that doesn't have the motorized portion and it's well made. I'm currently using a Best Tugs B5, and it is VERY well made. I think my only complaints are that I'd prefer the switches to be in a different layout and labels...
