I'm at a stop light right now. :D

CPL stuff: Private, Non-common, common carriage ... oof

Ooooh, that last one. Having been part of a mixed 91/135 operation, I was definitely glad I never got ramp checked even though we did everything 100% legally. It was kind of a fractional, but not in the 91K sense. If someone was on board their own airplane it was 91, if someone was on another...

Southwest Airliner Hit by Gunfire in Dallas 11/15/24

I'd bet a good bit that the vast majority do not save $583/mo over 40 years, especially if they're paying thousands in rent. I wonder what the equivalent home in that area would cost to buy. Having someone else take care of the property is certainly a bonus, but it also means you're paying...

The "Back in my day" Thread

Oh my. This thread is sure bringing back some memories! In stereo where available. Freedom! As a GenX kid I had very little supervision. And yes, I drank from the hose and all that stuff too. I rode my bike on fairly busy highways to get places with friends... I did not live in town so put a...

    DOGE and the FAA

There are a LOT of trainers that are not certified for intentional spins. Any of the taper-wing Cherokees, the Diamonds, SR20... Cessna trainers are but we shouldn't be requiring people to learn in a Cessna. Not necessarily. The FAA decided that it wasn't really particularly smart to be...

If you are landing somewhere other than the point of origin - ie, the beach - Then no, you must pay at least your share or you are providing air transportation for compensation or hire and the photos are irrelevant. Getting to this in the CFRs is not particularly straightforward, but if you...

    Lets make Friday 'Joke Day'!

Teslas have an optional chime to alert you when the light turns green or the person in front of you goes in response to a green light. Why yes, I do have it on. :D

Southwest Airliner Hit by Gunfire in Dallas 11/15/24

Seems like it might have some of the same effects... Or maybe is driven by them! I wonder what's going to happen to all those people when it's time to go to the nursing home and they have zero equity in anything. Drop 'em off at the dump?

Southwest Airliner Hit by Gunfire in Dallas 11/15/24

Interesting. Of course, a lot of people wanted to get out of an apartment and into a house during Covid, and interest rates were historically low, so maybe it's still recovering from that. But, I think PE buying homes is kind of everywhere. To be buying that proportion of the homes on the...

Southwest Airliner Hit by Gunfire in Dallas 11/15/24

Of course. But the demand is artificially being doubled by all of this private equity investment, which is pricing real people out of the market. Any idea why we're not building more? I mean, I probably wouldn't build right now simply because of the uncertainty of the market with all this PE...

Another interesting flowchart would be what you need each cert for, and what other requirements there are, for various types of flying. Airlines aren't the only reason you'd need an ATP, and 135 has experience requirements in addition to certificate requirements.

FAA will lay off all ARTCC meteorologists and use automated forecasting instead

Interesting that TRACON or tower even have to watch something from CWSU. I wouldn't think it would be very relevant either. Weather in a small area like that isn't easy to work around anyway, that's more of a go/no-go situation than a "what routings should we use" situation. I'm guessing one...

Southwest Airliner Hit by Gunfire in Dallas 11/15/24

Yikes. I think I saw somewhere that 44% of houses sold last year were purchased by private equity... Yet we have a housing shortage. This is all going to lead to a major crash at some point, quite possibly worse than 2006/2008.

Easy to dismiss something when it doesn't seem to affect you directly... But as badly as ATC is understaffed right now, we don't need to make their job harder. Human nature, though... We're greedy, so we want the government to cut, cut, cut without necessarily understanding the effects. Then we...

Important aspects of flying (outside of passing the checkride) that a pilot should learn for PP.

Great discussion @idahoflier, thank you. I think it is generally covered only in situations where renters need to refuel the planes at least part of the time, and that most FBOs with a fuel truck don't bother. Personally, I was in the latter situation, but as a former lineman I'd fueled...

Mark, For commercial students, it might be more helpful to put all of the operations where an air carrier certificate is required into one box labeled "Get a job at an air carrier" with a short list of what the various types of certificates are for, and put in some more boxes for things that...

It's human nature. I think I need to get one of those T-shirts I've seen advertised recently that says "History sighs, repeats self." This is not a service that is for us. It's for ATC. I don't believe so, what do you think replaces a human with responsibility for weather in the ARTCC as...

Southwest Airliner Hit by Gunfire in Dallas 11/15/24

Most people don't talk trash about their home... If it's that bad, they'd leave! Um. Low humidity? In west TX, sure. But have you been to Houston? Ugh. At least it's a soaking wet heat. Well, you kinda need a plane to just get around the state! :D But for real, I think Texas is good for GA...

It sounds like they're shutting down the Center Weather Service Units (CWSUs). They're essentially the weather briefers for ATC as well as keeping an eye on the weather in each Center and providing alerts to ATC, as I understand it. Controllers will still be able to see precipitation on their...
