Alton bay ice runway

No where near enough ice this year. Quite a warm winter this year.

Not going to land a paper airplane at Alton bay this season :(

Actually I think it will get frozen enough to land a plane there, but it's just too late in the season now and the weather just not reliable enough for all the effort required.

Alton Bay ice runway should be open tomorrow 1/23

We're going to swing over to Saturday to watch the fun.

Had a really fun visit - 26 degrees and sunny, constant stream of planes in and out and lots of folks just around enjoying the day. Really glad I wore my ice spikes. Saw more than one person go down hard.

Oddity of the day, A Yak-18T but there was a wide mix of planes from Bonanza to Cubs.

And one approaching it was so bright it was hard to see the image on the phone.

Good times! Neat to watch the planes land heading north, right over where we parked. More than a few pilots had to add a little throttle on short final. Air traffic was pretty well behaved when I flew in, everyone coordinating nicely.

Went there this Sunday. It’s definitely something to do, just to do it. Got there a little after 12, and it really wasn’t busy at all. A little bit of a tailwind on landing, wheels feel just a little squirrely on roll out. The guys really have it setup well with the marsheller every point.

Wish they had it more of a destination. There were only two restaurants open, and the closest one had 1 1/2 hour wait.

Don’t forget to get your token and certificate.

Went in yesterday - couldn't ask for a better day - got my chip and certificate.

Landing was no big deal. Touched down in the Archer at 55 KTS and made the first turn off. Takeoff was more interesting. Gradual power would have been a better plan than a short field takeoff. When your nose wheel is skidding along you have little directional control until the rudder becomes effective. Lesson learned.
