Until Blanton's comes back, may I suggest...

And now I've got the Hozier song stuck in my head

"I'll take my whisky neat"

I loved my Whistle Pig but decided since I’m awful at moderating, I should stop starting, so I quit almost a year ago. No advice from anyone, no physical addiction, no victory over an invisible enemy. I figured it was time. Best thing I’ve done in a long time.

...I really, really, really like Michener's https://michters.com/ I've tried a bunch of theirs and they run around $50 a bottle (and that's in WA with an insanely high tax, so probably $35 down in CA/NV. Really good stuff and it's always on the shelf.
Thanks for the tip. Michter's doesn't say how long the bourbon is aged. If you have a bottle around, does it say?

Anybody tried Redwood Empire Pipe Dream? Not my favorite. A little light in the mouth, but nice finish. Not a bad mixing bourbon for Manhattan's and such as it's fairly reasonably priced.

Dickel's for sippin'.

some of my favorite boozes are makers, monkey shoulder and a new one for me, four roses single barrel. well wouldncha know it, all three were on sale last night so my bar is stocked for a coupl'a days.

I've never been much of a bourbon guy, Scotch is more my thing, but tonight I'm sipping a glass of "Bear Fight", an American single malt whisky from North Carolina. Quite good, in fact remarkably good considering its reasonable price.

Try these on if you find any of the ten in this series.

wait, I don't get it, they don't really say what the difference is between each one. I 'think' I got the OBSV but who knows....

Look at the label on the neck. If it says OBSV, you’ve got OBSV.

If you don’t have a recipe label, well…..it’s not part of the release.

You have the 2025 OBSV Single Barrel.
AI to the rescue....

OBSV may refer to a bourbon recipe from Four Roses, an international public speaking agency, or a function in MathWorks.

Four Roses OBSV
  • OBSV is a bourbon recipe from Four Roses Distillery that uses a high-rye mashbill and the V yeast strain.

  • The B mashbill is a mix of 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley.

    • The V yeast strain adds delicate fruit flavors like apricot, pear, and plum.
    • As the bourbon ages, it develops flavors of caramel, vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
    • OBSV is a limited single barrel bourbon

All that’s on the recipe page. I did not know they were releasing OBSV (recipe 1) with a blank label. My distributor said he’s only getting three of the four single barrel recipes this year. I’ve got two and hoping I’ll come across the others.

which one do u need?

I don't get into the whole small batch, limited release thing. If I find something I really like, I want to know I can buy it again next week, and next year. The manufacturer of one of my very favorite pipe tobaccos was just bought up by a Danish company, which proceeded to unceremoniously pull the plug - and just like that, it's gone. That really ticks me off. The last thing I want is to have a bottle of whatever that turns out to be incredibly good, and I know I'll never be able to get it again.

I hear you. Weller’s used to be my go to, when it was $19/handle.

Then it (and a lot of other BT stuff) got derailed by BT and I rarely buy a Buffalo Trace product now. Single barrels then got popular and everyone went to producing ‘experimental’ single barrels. I passed on most. Maker’s 46 Cask Strength was the exception because it is what Weller’s used to be which is a great bourbon for its price.

Last summer, we were in Scotland and went into the SMWS’s Kaleidoscope Bar and I learned what could really be a value whisky when white labelled.

I’m not a SMWSA member and may only buy a bottle or two a year, but that’s really great stuff and probably the best value in whisky around, even if it may be expensive on occasion.

I checked the two different bottles we happened to have in the cabinet and didn't see an obvious age on either of them. I can attest they're great though.

Comes back? I didn't know it left. What happened?

I've been picking these up as gifts for friends when I'm on a layover in Tokyo. Decided to get one for myself this go 'round.
