Two Dead in Jet Blue Gear Compartment

Forgive my ignorance here. The cause of death was not disclosed so I am asking if the wheel compartments are pressurized? Is it possible for a person to survive inside the wheel compartment assuming they are not crused to death by the landing gear when retracted?

Not pressurized, not heated. So depends on altitude, length of flight and environmentals… other than crushing.
So if the airplane cruises at 30,000 feet for 1 hour a person could die of lack if oxygen, or freeze to death, or both, or be crushed by the landing gear when it retracts.

Last four flights Kingston Jamaica to JFC , JFK to SLC, SLC to JFK, JFK to FLL…I suspect they have been there since Kingston…this is sad.

Yes, however these people don’t have any concept of temperature lapse rates nor the decreased saturation of oxyhemoglobin with rise in altitude.

Yes, chances of winning this game are exceedingly low. But if you don’t know you don’t know.

Sounds like a "walk around" fail.

Ya, kinda. Some wheel wells are too far up in the air to inspect. Dunno about baby bus.

Even the MD80 has spots that are difficult to inspect, and not really expected to be checked unless for security reasons (international flights, origin flights, etc).

Can always blame it on a walk around, but that might not be totally fair. Also, many times there are situation where someone could sneak in there AFTER the walk around. So there’s that.

No matter, too many of these are gonna have consequences for the poor schleps out there in the trenches!

How’s that gonna work without a flight attendant to come along and yell “elbows and feet” before gear retraction?

Seriously if foreign airports can’t secure their ramp areas the FAA should not permit aircraft landings at US airports until they get their third world ramps secured.

You have to realize most airliners have doors that cover much of the wheel wells while the gear are extended. There are a lot of areas a pilot walking around won't be able to see into.

The bigger failure is airport security, allowing unknown persons to access the aircraft while on the ramp. Granted, most of these cases involve third world countries where security is non existent.

Well, that third world security effectively keeps the PIC away from the plane while undergoing a body cavity search… geesh…

Interlopers, buy their way in easily.

compare and contrast TSA screening requiring removal of shoes with allowing flights from places that fail to protect from someone stashing a meatbomb in the gear compartment.

Of course, don't look at the screening process for what goes into the cargo compartment.

the bus has fuselage doors that close about 7 feet above the ground, without a ladder or dropping the doors, which flight crew are not trained to do, you cannot see into the fuselage area of the wheel well.

Camera on a stick, with handheld monitor. Or even a mirror.
