Incident that occurred a long time ago

About ten years ago when I was a newly college kid, I had taken too much of a mind-altering substance and had to be taken to the ER for just a few hours during the day. I ended up leaving okay, no post-treatment and went straight home. There was no criminal record of the incident, never engaged with anything else ever since.

I'm meeting with a HIMS AME for a consultation tomorrow, not an exam, and just remembered this happening. I wondering if I should bring this matter up with them or rather an aviation attorney first. While I understand the FAA will have access to the ER record, I don't want to dig myself into a hole any further than what's necessary. My MedXpress hasn't been filled out yet. What should I do first?

Thanks.

What’s your end goal with flying?

Don’t confuse a medical certification problem with a legal problem.

Bring it to the AME. If you don’t have the medical records, get them. Bring them back and get a good consult on what’s needed for AMCS to bury the hatchet.

Could be a nothingburger, might be an annoyance, but coming clean up front avoids the threat of federal time for lying on an official record.

Worth thinking about:

Illegal drug use is reportable for 2 years.

A visit to a medical professional is reportable for 3 years.

Read the questions carefully, answer honestly. No need to answer questions not asked.

It’s their rules.

Consultation with the AME. Wait on the actual medical until a consult discussion. Do NOT provide the number on your medxpress.

Consult first. If the AME won’t do a consult, find another AME.

What was said at the ER visit or like others said, obtain the record.
