I am currently a student pilot and had to take a little over a year off from my training due to changing jobs as well as losing my CFI to the airlines. I was close to taking my checkride at that time and was basically just prepping for it. Getting to that point took longer than normal as I started training without getting my medical and underestimated the time it would take to get a special issuance as I have sleep apnea. I ended up getting everything taken care of and had my 3rd class medical and SI and went on to complete all of my requirements except for 1 hour of solo before unfortunately having to take a break. I'm almost ready to get back to training and hopefully finish getting my PPL. I've decided I'd like go basic med so I completed the online training course got the certificate, filled out all the forms and had the medical exam done and signed. I believe I'm good to go but I'm a bit nervous that it may cause issues for me using basic med as a student pilot. I can't seem to find any clear info from the FAA saying student pilots can use basic med and I've even tried emailing them to see but got no response. Does anyone have first hand experience with this and how did the flight schools you use react to you using basic med? In my research I've read about some people having issues and others that say it was no problem.

Yes. It's not common because most people pass their private practical test before their initial medical expires, but it's completely allowable. Here's the regulatory citation allowing it: 14 CFR 61.89(d)

Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to have the regulations at hand and memorized so if there are any questions or doubts from my new CFI, flight school or a DPE I can lay it out for them.

Fantastic info here! I'm in exactly the same boat, except I'm waiting until I'm close to being done with my plane. Should be middle of next year, I hope. Thanks for posting!

That’s a good attitude. After 8 years, they are all pretty familiar with it. Some of the instructors may even be BasicMed.

But a DPE will likely test your knowledge of your privileges and limitations as a BasicMed pilot.
