Hello, as many of you know I’ve been in a deferral/denial limbo for over 2 years. I’m finally at the point of doing my new medical exam/application for class 3, having met the 6 months or drug tested sobriety for alcohol dependence deferral, as well as shown 4+ years of stable SSRI treatment for GAD/social anxiety related to work presentation and public speaking.

I’ve read a few posts where OP says the were issued SI, but only had 30-60 days left on it by the time it was issued/received and then transitioning to BM.

Question: Am I correct in interpreting that the SI cert is valid 6 months from the date of the MedExpress application submission and should expect FAA determination within 6 months? Or, does the clock start at time of approval/issuance but it can take 4-5 months for the SI to actually be received?

I’m trying to understand the timing as my prior class 3 medicals were issued in office.

Thanks!

It's from the date of the AME exam.
But the two month issuance is easy-peasy. You get a BASIC, and then as you are continouing even after application with teh drug testing, you reapply for your renewal. Most HIMS authorizations contain AME auth in the field to reissue you. PS if it's been a year since you saw the HIMS psychiatrist, you will need a new visit for that re issuance.....after all, terms of any Alcohol/drug SI requrie a return after one year.

And if they haven't gotten to you by 1 year, you turn in the new testing and the new HIMS psychitrist eval, and the updated HIMS AME eval, as a matter of course, so that you actually do get issued, rather than short demanded for the @ 1 year stuff (even if you have not been issued).

My question is why are you asking here? You should be asking your HIMS AME these items. After all, he's sponsoring the application!

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve had both updated pysch/neuropsych evals in the last 3 months, so good there…I think?

Does “BASIC” mean I, hopefully, will have an SI to start flying within 60-90 days after the exam, or am I still going to be waiting 1+ years?

I have my exam next month so intend to ask them this then, but question was on my mind now and I’m just trying to set personal expectations.

Thanks!

Even though my SI’s are only 6 month SI’s, my initial SI was issued 45 days short of a full year post 2nd exam. It was valid for the remaining 45 days.

I immediately went through the BasicMed process and got BasicMed established. I continued compliance for the remaining 45 days (even did one more substance test beyond that just to be sure). I then submitted all of the required items and walked away.

I guess I’m really just trying to know when I’ll be in a position to fly under SI; I.e. when should I expect it to be approved and be medically legal to operate as class 3.

Within a few months of my new Exam date or over a year?

Sorry, just following up to see if anyone has timing feedback. Does the fact that the SI medical has a 6 month effective period change the FAA’s response time to issue/make determination for SI, or still looking at over a year from exam date to reply?

Thanks!

NO. and why are you asking a web board these Quex? Your HIMS AME is your go-to….(as I said on the 19th).

Because it’s a forum for such questions and getting feedback from the many having been through the same is helpful to set expectations.

Thank you for the reply.
