I completed the AGI about a year ago and don't yet have a CFI certificate. A coworker is up for a BFR. I figure it's a good excuse to build a BFR ground outline and run through the ground portion of the BFR with him, but I'm not current on the AGI.

61.217 lists currency as within the last 12 months: full-time employment as an instructor (not me), completion of a flight instructor refresher, or receiving an endorsement on knowledge areas. Looking at the flight instructor refresher courses, they all seem to require a current CFI certificate, so that doesn't seem to be an option. I wanted to see if others have had a similar experience trying to keep an AGI current.

I work with another CFI to get endorsed in the knowledge areas - A.55 in 61-65J IIRC?

The term “full time” is not in 61.217, nor does the regulation require any employment. The term approved flight instructor refresher course is in the regulation.

§ 61.217 Recent experience requirements.
The holder of a ground instructor certificate may not perform the duties of a ground instructor unless the person can show that one of the following occurred during the preceding 12 calendar months:

(a) Employment or activity as a ground instructor giving pilot, flight instructor, or ground instructor training;

(b) Employment or activity as a flight instructor giving pilot, flight instructor, or ground instructor ground or flight training;

(c) Completion of an approved flight instructor refresher course and receipt of a graduation certificate for that course; or

(d) An endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying that the person has demonstrated knowledge in the subject areas prescribed under § 61.213(a)(3) and (a)(4), as appropriate.

You may become current by completing an approved flight instructor refresher course or by having a CFI endorse you have demonstrated knowledge of the subject areas in 61.213.

Sporty’s offers a free flight FAA approved. instructor refresher course. Enter your certificate number 123456AGI and show the expiration date within the next 90 days.
