I was having a conversation about avionics with someone who wants to be able to shoot non-precision GPS approaches with a plane that currently has a KLX-135A. My opinion is, if doing any wiring, install something with WAAS, but he was thinking if a IFR GPS/Com can drop in (with the annunciator being the only wiring addition) that may be a good way to save money.

I am not familiar with Bendix-King GPSes from the 90s, are there any drop in replacements for that unit that can handle RNAV approaches?

You would also need an indicator (CDI). Not likely one was installed for a VFR-only GPS.

Just my oppinion but installing a non-waas GPS is a fools errand. The choices were limited and I'd be surprised if you could still get database updates for them.

Bendix King did not make a slide-in replacement for the KLX-135A. Also, it is barely supported by them as well.

For GPS/Com combo units, your options are limited to mostly Garmin. Currently, Garmin only produces the GNC 355 and GTN 635Xi GPS/Com units. There are/were other options from Garmin such as the GNC 300/XL and GNC-420/W but they are either no longer supported by Garmin or will be in the near future. As camorton indicated, I would not recommend installing a non-WAAS GPS.
