Hi. I’ve been reading previous posts on here concerning having ADD in teen years and becoming a pilot and there have been many helpful posts. My son has decided that he wants to be a commercial pilot. This is really all he can see himself doing. He is a 17 year old junior in high school. During his freshman year he was diagnosed with mild ADHD by his pediatrician and was placed on medication. His pediatrician said at the time that he’s so borderline that we may not even see any improvement and I know that we were stupid to even try it. He was on the medicine for a school year and we really saw no change in him. His issue was more with being anxious on the baseball field and making mental mistakes due to that. He was a freshman placed in a starting spot on varsity and his nerves got the best of him. His symptoms have since improved due to simply maturing. He is an A/B AP/Honors student and has remained to have great grades without medication. We had a consultation meeting with an AME in town yesterday concerning the ADD diagnosis. He was nice, but not real helpful. He gave us a name of a HIMS neuropsychologist, but it seemed he didn’t know much about her. He also didn’t seem to have much direction for us. We want to get the ball rolling so that if he passes, he can apply for schools his senior year. So I have several questions that I’m hoping you can help us out on.
1) the AME said to visit the neuropsychologist before seeing him to have the medical test. I believe I'm reading that a medical test needs to happen first and then get denied and then proceed with testing?
2) recommendation on best local AME for our situation in the Cincinnati/Northern KY vicinity
3) recommendation on best HIMS Neuropsychologist for our situation in KY/OH/IN. (Or further if need be)
4) I have read to have all records together and that the process will be lengthy and costly, which we’re more than willing pursue since he wants this so badly. Any advice from others who have been in a similar situation?
5) is it known if there are more that pass than fail? known percentages?
6) if my son would happen to fail the Cog test- is it possible to retest and how soon after if this is allowed? And is it possible for a teenager to pass the testing?

Thank you so much…..I’m new to this and just hoping for some advice.

(1) I do this the same wasy AME #1 advises.
(2) ?? Choose a HIMS AME but I'm not going to comment publically here (names).
(3) is in CHI, the one in lexington is okay.
(4) takes a year, and you are starting just in time.
(5) he has to outscore the bottom 15th percentile of known aviators of like age.
(6) One year as the forebrain is not mature until age 25.
