Coax antenna to Onkyo receiver with HDMI

Can I use a COAX to HDMI adapter to route the antenna coax output to an HDMI input on my Onkyo receiver so that the video goes to the smart TV and the audio goes through my surround sound? My receiver has 6 HDMI inputs but it only has one 75ohm input labeled FM.

I have been connecting the antenna directly to the TV but then I just get the crappy sound from the TV. Yesterday I connected the 75ohm antenna out to the 75 ohm FM in, but all I get are FM Radio stations. I get those really well, but that's not what I want.

If it's a recent TV you should be able to use the HDMI ARC input/output to send the sound from the TV to the Onkyo receiver. That's what we do when streaming.

Also is the COAX for an antenna or for Cable/Dish? Because the cable/dish box should have an HDMI out.

I'd look at two things.

1. Does the TV have a digital out fiberoptic port and same for receiver? Connect the two with a fiberoptic cable and select that input
2. The TV should have an HDMI OUT, just connect that to HDMI in on the reciever

The A/V receiver has a Toslink optical input, but the TV does not.

The rooftop antenna has a coax output.
My TV has a coax input, but then I have listen to the crappy tv speakes. That is what I have been doing, but I wanted better audio.

My A/V reciever has 6 HDMI inputs (for ROKU, PC, Games etc) and one HDMI output to go to the tv. This allows me to watch the video output on my 65 in tv and listen t the audio on my A/V receiver sound system.

But the A/V receiver doesn't have a coax input, except for FM radio.

Is there an adapter that will convert coax output to HDMI input?

Does your TV have analog audio outputs (either 3.5mm phone or RCA) that you could connect to your receiver? That is what I used to hook up an external amp/speakers to my TV and it works fine. I had to go into the TV settings and turn the built-in speakers off.

It's a 65 inch Visio about 6 yrs old. Model D65u-D2

It does have quite a few connections on the back, but they are really hard to see or access without help because of the mount. And I can't find the manual. The TV came with the house.

I found this on line. I think it is what I have and it looks like it does have an optical port, which my AV receiver also has. I'll have to see if that helps, but my optical cables may not be long enough and moving either device is out of the question.

You want to use the AUDIO OUT (ARC) HDMI 1 and connect that to the receiver. It runs both directions so you can send sound and video either direction. Set the receiver to TV input for your sound, and select the antenna input on the TV. Then on your speaker setup on the TV you set that to ARC (or similar) and you get the picture on the TV and the sound on the Onkyo.

You want variable on that. Under TV speakers, is it only ON/OFF or is there other options. Might have to switch between PCM or bitstream to see if one works and one doesn't. This looks like it should be what you want for the set up. We have a Vizio TV in our bedroom. When I get home I will see what we have setup for the sound output.

I would move the HDMI1 (arc enabled) to your TV input/output on the AVR. Move the Roku to a Media/Streaming HDMI port. HDMI1 (with ARC) will carry the audio signal to the receiver.

Your coax will not attach anywhere but on the television, and utilizes the TV Tuner inside the television.

There are standalone tuners available which will use a WiFi module that connects to the coax and then you use an App on your smart TV to watch whatever OTA channel you want, but that's a different expense. (HDHomeRun is a great option)

PCM/Bitstream only applies if he is using the optical audio port on both the TV and connected to an optical audio input (likely input assignable). However, I would skip the optical audio on pretty much anything modern because it is limited in stream rate and generally doesn't support the latest audio codecs (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X.)

Here's the relevant page from the manual. You have two options. There's a 2-way HDMI you can connect. If another device is using it, switch to one of the other 4. Or there's an optical out.

I am amazed that any AV receiver would not have RCA inputs. What model number is it?
