    Iranian Helicopters

So I wasn't a fan of Raisi but I'm also not a fan of fatal aviation accidents... So... What do we think brought the helicopter down? Weather seems like the obvious culprit with photos from the region looking foggy as all hell. But I'm guessing the guy ferrying the president and foreign minister...

    Next plane...

I'm going to take the assignment in a different direction. You're not hauling many pax, you're doing primarily short haul local flights with only a couple longer trips per year and you have an airfield that can be a little tight to get out of? Forget speed, I'd get something like a Maule (trike...

    Daily Pic

Found this gem in a magazine from a while back, buried in the extra stuff the previous owner gave me years back. I now feel affordably affluent!

how much risk flying in windy conditions

To me that sounds like a great time to grab an instructor and go flying to get the experience. Normally I'd say don't earn your PPL by avoiding real life conditions (within reason): like dodging gusty winds, cross wind days, choppy days, etc. That just means you have to learn them on your own...

If [BLANK] is what you find too expensive about flying...

Thank you @Bell206 for the complete response. In terms of my comment regarding my "brackets take the cake" statement, that's from my POV. I know there's people with maintenance bills/heartaches far beyond my own. But when I saw those brackets for $3k (x2 of them) I nearly shat a brick because...

If [BLANK] is what you find too expensive about flying...

There are some parts where I just cannot wrap my head around the price. This one, from back when I first bought my aircraft, probably takes the cake. I remember being distinctly underwhelmed when I googled the part number and saw a component that looked like this. It was that exact moment in...

If [BLANK] is what you find too expensive about flying...

I don't think I'll be building a universal joint myself, but there's other components where I think it might make sense to go this route. I'm curious how tolerant A&Ps are of using an owner supplied part and signing off on it, though? I've never tried but perhaps I should for some basic pieces...

If [BLANK] is what you find too expensive about flying...

Let's make it more realistic. There should be a 4th bag labeled "FAA approved airplane screwdriver, serial number FU-LOL-123499PX" for $159.99. Backordered for 3 months. And what a timely topic b/c yesterday I just did a walkthrough on my discrepancy list for the arrow annual and the A&P...

    Private Sale or Broker?

Given how much 206s sell for and thus much you'd have to pay a broker as a fee for doing it, I'd try listing it on my own first. It's worth a little headache to save yourself a 5 digit sum (or it is to me at least!). And my guess is your 206 will be in a high enough price bracket where the worst...

    DPE availability in unacceptable

This sounds a lot like a 141 school near me in the Chicago suburbs. A friend was trying to get her stage check done and due to poor availability of the chief instructor who could sign you off combined with bad luck with weather, she ended up having her ride rescheduled twice. Each time having to...

DIY Electronic Nerd Project Ideas for Aviation

Spent some time this evening tinkering with the BMP280. I like it. Super easy to wire up and better than my other one which is the same price, the MPL115A2. Over 5 minutes of 1x/second observations it didn't wander off from the altitude by more than 6 inches (it was stationary during that...

    Plane purchase 1st time

Lots of ways to do it but here's my checklist: 1a) Figure out your mission, budget and what you're seeking. Doesn't hurt to post on PoA and get others opinions based on your mission - lots of people do it. 1b) Call up an insurance broker/company and see if you qualify for insurance and can...

DIY Electronic Nerd Project Ideas for Aviation

That would actually be a lot of fun to build. Most, if not all of the required sensors/MCU for building that are things I have handy, too. I've got several GPS sensors which I've used for navigation stuff, too. I suppose I could have it cheat and periodically update/recalibrate based on the...

DIY Electronic Nerd Project Ideas for Aviation

That makes sense. I actually never found a use for my encoder until you wrote that so I busted it out and the resolution is pretty poor indeed. Granted, it's a budget unit that cost me about $5 so... I got what I paid for...

And here I was, a sucker, paying a couple hundred dollars in drop off fees when I could have been cruising in box-truck style for less!

    I Hate Enterprise

I was in Seattle a few weeks ago and tried to pick up my reserved rental car from Hertz. I get to the counter in the afternoon to pick up my car only to find out at check-out that I'm on the "DNR: DO NOT RENT" list. That was a shock. Apparently it's normally to prevent irresponsible renters...

the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

ForeFlight calculates it from their data and shows it in the METAR page. Lots of automated weather stations at airports give out this information too, even though in my neck of the woods they could safely leave it out. Turns out the flat plains of IL doesn't offer much in the way of challenging...

    Pocket knife: Weird or normal?

It's pretty unreasonable to consider a multi-tool like the one you posted as a "weapon". It probably gets 80% of its use helping to cut open Amazon boxes lol. And hell a freakin' screw driver is probably a more dangerous "weapon" than a swiss army knife.
